Jules Damian, who participated in 'Singing in Siena' 2008 and 'Singing in Samoa' in July this year has organised a Samoa fundraiser concert with her choir, the Hawkesbury Song Company, in Windsor (NSW) this Sunday.
You are invited to an afternoon concert of classical, renaissance, gospel, folk, modern and Christmas songs.
All donations will go to the Saleapaga Village, Samoa. Special guest artist – Mr Terry Sloane Musical Director - Ms Judy Gray. Pianist – Ms Roz Mancy ALL WELCOME

It will be held at a beautiful historic church, 2-4pm, St Matthews Anglican Church in Moses Street, Windsor

CRISES: News from Julea Miguel in Samoa

A member of this years Singing in Samoa group, Julea Miguel, has arrived back in Samoa this week to see what needs doing and to help out as much as possible.

I just received some very distressing news from her saying that the living conditions are horrendous! She is staying with Rosa and Tapu and the family on the beach in very rough and unsanitary conditions.
The food situation is desperate for her, she is living on a slice of pineapple and the others on a bit of white bread & tinned meat.
AID/relief money has not reached them yet. They are living on what we send directly to them. With 40 or so mouths to feed I'm afraid that does not go far.

I know our press thinks this is old news and that we have been saturated with this but we need to spread the word of this situation.

Please share this blog as one way to get the news out.

Samoa freight

Sending clothing and other items to Samoa.

I had a meeting yesterday with Richard David from the Samoa Council Sydney. Richard and the Samoa Council have organised about 8 shipping containers of items to be sent to Samoa as part of emergency relief. The first of these is due to arrive in Samoa on Monday.

If you have items wishing to be delivered to Samoa.
Please label them as Samoa Donation for delivery to Faofao Beach Fales and send them to this warehouse address below;

Location: Rodd Street, Birrong. NSW
Warehouse hours: 9am to 4pm Monday to Friday, 10am to 2pm Saturday

Their last scheduled shipment to Samoa is on 19th November 2009 and will continue to accept freight donations up to 10th November 2009.

Samoa update & Donations

Hi there,

Thanks for all the donations.

So far the donations amount to nearly $7000.00 to the Legalo's, plus Vicki's Waiheke Island concert raised nearly $4000.00 for musical instruments, plus $3000.00 from the 'Honeybees' to the village.

I have made 2 large deposits direct to the Legalo bank account so far and will be making another one shortly to make up the balance.

The government is promising financial support to go to the villages towards infrastructure. They have not received this yet. Personal expenses still need to be met.

I spoke to Koroseta the other day and she says they are still living up on the 'mountain' in tents and are receiving clean water, food and lava lavas. So they are OK.

However, I was deeply saddened to hear that the children are having to walk nearly 3 hours each way to get to school. 6 hours a day to get an education! WOW. No car and they have to walk up and down the mountain in that incredible heat. Exhausting just thinking about it. On top of that they have to deal with the grief of losing so many of their friends.

Vaa, being the entrepreneurial one, has set up a bar in the remains of the old main fale (with a tarp over the top) to get some business going and help out the aid workers and locals.

Getting business going again is essential for survival. Koroseta is very worried about how and where she should set up some fales. Last week she was thinking that maybe the mountain is the best place for building these.
